Lojackin'

VOCAL RETAKE MIX 2/23/05: ADX originally did 4 vocal takes for this tune, and I comped them together into a single track. After listening to the rough mix, ADX decided to retake a couple of phrases and add to a couple of others. We did a total of 4 more passes, and ended up with a rather large protools session. The picture, below, shows the progression of takes and comps, from bottom to top.

You can also see the volume automations, which I used to balance out and blend together the separate vocal sections. After bouncing a completed vocal retake (blue stereo track, top), I edited up the take into loops and exported them to Reason. I've been naming the files with the bar numbers (i.e. lo_vox_52-56), so drawing the midi notes into the NN-XT sequencer track is quite orderly.

I went through the three guitar tracks Adrian recorded for this tune and made loops out of the best segments. I ended up with 9 loops, which I imported into a drum machine (Redrum) in Reason, then triggered at appropriate times.

It works like a dream! I can place your licks at just the right spots, and can apply funky space echo delay with the Reason effects engine. This pic is of the sequencer window for the Redrum track. As you can see, different guitar loops are triggered in an easily arranged order.

Here's a photo of the Reason session and the Redrum device. The guitar loop samples are loaded into Redrum on the top (channels 1-10), then triggered with a MIDI track (at the very bottom). Each individual sample can be levelled and panned within the Redrum tracks, so balancing the samples was a snap.
